A pictorial record of those churches and chapels which still contain west galleries, two- and three-decker pulpits, box-pews and other furniture and fittings, from the period when singers and their accompanying instruments used metrical psalms from manuscript quire books, the use of hymns during church services was forbidden, and the number of organs was limited to the more wealthy town parishes.
